Introduction for the work shop
When experiencing accidents like Deepwater Horizon, an obvious question is how could so much go wrong at the same time? Answering this question is not straightforward, but an important aspect is how to manage an increasing degree of complexity.
This increasing complexity in offshore operations results in new demands on how we think about safety and it has been questioned whether safety research has failed to keep pace with the otherwise rapid technological development.
We need innovative thinking concerning how to cope with the unexpected. Furthermore, we need to improve our capabilities to interact and make decisions in an environment of increasing degree of complexity and uncertainty.
