A Geoscientist by background, he joined BP in 1978 after graduating from Durham University, England, with a BSc in Geology and Geophysics. A British national, he has worked in multiple locations for BP spanning a 34 year career covering exploration, appraisal, mature field development and Information Technology & Services roles. He has held various Upstream positions in London, Aberdeen, Alaska, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Houston. Steve has been seconded into other companies to represent BP 3 times during his career. As a geoscientist, moved around the world frequently, he is passionate about setting and adopting standard ways of working across the Upstream segment.

Steve held various technical leadership positions in the IT&S function, culminating in becoming the VP Common Digital Solutions; E&P Disciplines, accountable for driving the development and adoption of standardised IT solutions for all the E&P specific technical disciplines. Steve moved back into Subsurface Technology in January 2011 when he was appointed as VP, Field of the Future flagship program. He is now accountable for setting and executing the strategic direction of R&D investments in digital oil field technology across Upstream divisions.
